The Dwarf Black Olive Makes an Awesome Bonsai

by on Nov.24, 2008, under family

When you’re taking pictures of hundreds of trees for a bonsai website, it’s impossible to do justice to all of them, which is one reason to read the descriptions.  A great example of the reverse application of ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ speaks directly to the question of scale.  When you only have one bonsai tree pictured against a backdrop, you can easily loose the scale and not realize just how impressive the tree really is.  A perfect example is in the picture of a one of a kind Dwarf Black Olive Bonsai at Zen Garden Bonsai.

What you can’t tell from this picture is that this tree is BIG.  This isn’t your average inconspicuous indoor bonsai.  It’s a whopping 34 inches tall with a span of almost two feet.  This is a tree that will own the room.  It will be best placed in a bright, warm entrance or living area or even in a corporate environment. It’s that impressive.  But it also needs to be taken care of. The Dwarf Black Olive is not the Mediterranean Olive Tree we are familiar with.  This native of the Caribbean, more properly named Bucida spinosa is an evergreen with dark, narrow, bluish-green leaves.  It thrives in the sun and you must be careful to never, ever let this tree get cold.  Keep the temperature about 45F.
