Be Smart About e-Auctions

Identity theft criminals are getting smarter and smarter ways to separate you from your money. Like most of us, you may enjoy the thrill of bidding for those most precious items on eBay! A recent victim of identity theft was emailed by the “supposed” seller, and said that it would be easier to just transfer the money directly to his PayPal account, through the link he provided. The customer hesitated, but saw the PayPal logo, and proceeded to transfer the money, while also providing personal information. What the customer didn’t know was that it was a fake copy of the PayPal logo, which leads to a site that allows the end user to steal all of your personal information, including credit cards, etc. Thankfully, this identity theft victim was a member of LifeLock, the leading, proactive identity theft protection company.
Be certain that when you make purchases in an e-auction, that you use the site’s recommended method of payment, to ensure safety of your personal information. When a seller asks you to pay via a different method of payment, simply reply that you will pay by the method of payment displayed on the site, and keep track of the seller’s name, email, and any other information that could be used to track potential identity thieves. To protect your identity, please be sure to visit LifeLock.com.
